Work for the Service
The Service employs 1,180 people — assessment officers, enumerators, accountants, lawyers, vehicle inspection officers, data analysts and service desk agents. Recruitment is by open competition, and every stage of it is published.
What working here is like
A revenue officer occupies an unusual position in public service: you deal directly with citizens and businesses about money, you carry statutory powers, and almost everything you do is recorded. That combination attracts a particular sort of person and is uncomfortable for another sort, and it is worth being honest about which is which before applying.
The work is largely evidential. An assessment must be capable of being explained line by line to the taxpayer and defended before the Tax Appeal Tribunal. A field capture must carry coordinates, a photograph and a verifiable occupier. An audit finding must rest on documents. Officers who enjoy building a case from records do well here; officers who prefer discretion and informal arrangement do not last, because the platform records everything and the audit trail is read.
In return the Service invests seriously in professional qualification. It pays examination and membership fees in full for the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, ICAN, ANAN and CIPM, funds study leave, and requires assessment and audit officers to hold or be working towards a tax qualification. Two hundred and ten officers hold a professional tax or accountancy qualification, up from eighty-four in 2020.

How recruitment works

Vacancies are advertised
On this site, in two national newspapers and in the State Gazette, with the grade, the qualification required and the closing date. Nothing is filled without advertisement.
Applications are screened
Against the published qualification and experience requirement. Applicants who meet it are invited to the written test; those who do not are told why.
Written examination
Numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning and a technical paper appropriate to the role. Marked anonymously against a published scheme.
Panel interview
A three-member panel including one member from outside the directorate recruiting. Scored against published criteria and recorded.
Verification and clearance
Certificates verified with the awarding institution, references taken, and a police character clearance obtained.
Board approval
Appointments above grade level 13 are approved by the Board’s Establishment & Discipline Committee. Merit lists are published.
Induction
Six weeks covering revenue law, the platform, taxpayer conduct, data protection and the code of conduct, before any officer meets a taxpayer.

Recruitment is free
The Service charges nothing to apply, nothing to sit the written test and nothing to attend an interview. Anyone offering a job in the Service in exchange for money is defrauding you.
No officer, however senior, can secure an appointment outside the published process. Report any such offer on the whistleblower line with the name and the date.
Every vacancy is advertised on this site. If a role has not been advertised here, it does not exist.
