Revenue offices

An area revenue office in every one of the twenty local government areas, four zonal motor licensing stations and the head office at Revenue House. Every one of them can register a taxpayer, issue a payment reference and take a complaint.

What an area office can do for you

Every area revenue office offers the full range of taxpayer services: registration for a Taxpayer Identification Number, business premises registration, tax clearance certificate applications, filing an objection, setting up an instalment arrangement, and help with anything on the portal. Officers will complete a transaction on the portal on your behalf if you would rather not do it yourself, and there is no charge for that assistance.

What an area office cannot do is take your money. Cash is accepted at exactly one place in the Service — the designated, camera-monitored cash office at Revenue House — and only from taxpayers who genuinely have no electronic means. Every other payment goes through a bank, a POS terminal, a transfer, USSD or Remita, against a payment reference. An officer at an area office will generate that reference for you; they will not take the cash.

Motor licensing transactions requiring a physical vehicle — chassis verification, roadworthiness inspection, plate fixing — are handled at the four zonal licensing stations rather than at area revenue offices. Everything else about a vehicle, including renewal and payment, can be done anywhere or from a phone.

Area revenue offices

One in every local government area. All offices open Monday to Friday and close for the weekend; rural offices close an hour earlier.

Before you travel to an office

Almost everything an area office does can be done on the portal, including registration, applications, objections and payment. Travelling is worth it when you need a document scanned into your record, a signature witnessed, or help from an officer sitting beside you.

Bring your Taxpayer Identification Number and a valid means of identification. Offices are busiest in the last week of each month and in March; the first two weeks of a month are consistently quieter.

Enquiries are acknowledged within one working day and routed straight to the directorate that owns the matter.
